GPS Territory Game — Claim Real Streets in Your City

TurfWar is a GPS-based territory game where you claim real streets by running through them. Every block you run becomes yours on a live city map.

GPS territory games are a new category of location-based gaming that use your real-world movement to create competitive gameplay. TurfWar is the first GPS territory game built specifically for runners and walkers — where the goal is to own as much of your city as possible.

How the GPS Territory System Works

When you start a run in TurfWar, your phone's GPS tracks your position continuously. Every 30 meters of movement claims a street segment — a small section of road or path. The segment turns your territory color on the live map and is stored in the game database. Other players can see your territory in real time.

The GPS system is accurate to within a few meters, which means the game can distinguish between different streets, paths, and alleys. Running down one side of a block claims different segments than running down the other side.

Territory Claiming vs. Territory Defense

Claiming territory is only half the game. The other half is defending it. Any runner who passes through a street segment you own will steal it — turning it their color and sending you a push notification. This creates a dynamic where the map is constantly shifting as players compete for the same streets.

High-traffic areas like city centers, parks, and popular running routes become contested zones where territory changes hands multiple times a day. Quieter residential streets can be dominated by a single runner who consistently patrols them.

GPS Territory Games vs. Other Location Games

Unlike Pokémon GO, which uses GPS to place you in a virtual world, TurfWar uses GPS to make the real world the game board. There are no virtual creatures or items — just you, your city, and the streets you've claimed. The competition is purely about physical presence and consistency.

Unlike fitness apps like Strava, TurfWar isn't about logging your best time or longest distance. It's about owning space. A slow 2km walk through your neighborhood can claim more strategically valuable territory than a fast 10km run through empty streets.
